IR – Instrument Rating
The Instrument Rating develops your skill to fly procedural instrument flight with reference to the instrument panel only. It is available to PPL Night Rated pilots and to pilots as part of the CPL preparation if the pilot wishes to achieve a CPL IFR.
The training consists of three main components:
- Theory&Exam
- Instrument Flight Training General
- Instrument Flight Training Procedural
Much of the training is done on a certified simulator first to firm up the skill before taking to the sky in an appropriately instrument equipped aircraft, like our Cessna C172M aircraft, to practice the skills in the aircraft. The exam is written at a CAA exam station in Johannesburg or outstation, like in Durbanville. The training schedule is built around each student’s availability. With the IR you can fly at in the day or night under instrument weather conditions (called IMC).
